Bath Plug Cave

Bath Plug Cave     One of the "bath plugs", photographed in winter.     Waterfall and second "bath plug".

Location:

Cobham Wilderness Area, Southern Drakensberg.  It is not marked on the new maps of the area, but it does appear on the Slingsby and Giant's Cup Trail maps.  The cave lies on the Giant's Cup trail between the Pholela and Mzimkhulwana trail huts, about 4 km from the former.  The walk from Cobham involves a fairly lengthy climb before passing the Tortoise Rocks, and offers some fine views of the Cobham area.  It is closed to campers.

GPS Coordinates:

S29°70865 E29°38758 at 1 838 metres (Landlubbers)

History:

Water which flows over the lip of the main overhang trickles backwards towards the rock face and then disappears underground via a large hole.  In winter, water trickling down the waterfall to the side of the cave also disappears underground for a short distance, although in summer there is a sufficient volume of water to disguise this fact and it appears to all flow out of the pool as one would expect.
