Siphongweni RockLocation: Cobham Wilderness Area, Southern Drakensberg. Because of its valuable Bushman paintings, this cave has been declared a national monument. Despite this, some empty-minded visitors have left their graffiti at the site and it is not in as good a condition as some of the unmarked sites. The cave itself provides a magnificent view of the Giant's Cup and this part of the escarpment, and on a clear day the long climb up from the Pholela River is worth the effort for the view alone. Siphongweni Rock is itself a proper overhang, whereas Siphongweni Cave is beneath a wedge-shaped hollow under an enormous boulder that lies on the plain just below Siphongweni Rock. Hikers may stay in the latter "cave", but camping under the overhang at the rock art site itself is strictly prohibited. Warning: It is a serious offence to stay overnight in this cave because of its numerous Bushman paintings. This is generally the case for any cave containing large numbers of Bushman paintings. GPS Coordinates: Undisclosed. History: Unknown |
